Day 59: At what point am I too fat for normal clothes?

on

Apparently I’m 37 days pregnant which is only 5 weeks.

But I’m so. FAT!

My boobs have swollen to gargantuan proportions. They’d been doing this with the medication but now at the point that as soon as I get in the house I want to whip off the bra. But then I have these melons blobbing around pendulously and that’s not good either! I think I need to get some new bras. I’ve already moved to ones without underwire ages ago. I know it’s not cool but nor is feeling uncomfortable in the boob area. At least mine are from uniqlo so don’t look that bad! Although they currently do as they seem to be a size too small!

I wore my skinny jeans last week and they’re getting really too skinny for me. Way too tight around the waist. At what point do people start changing clothes? I can’t tell if this is just me being fat or some sort of pregnancy thing. Obviously I don’t want to go and buy proper maternity clothes but I now feel like my normal clothes aren’t really suiting me. Eg All the tops seem indecently booby. And my bum seems too big and I don’t like the way my belly is hanging over my trousers. I have been wearing slouchy “pregnancy pants” round the house.

So my questions to those of you who have been pregnant or are pregnant are:

  • When did you start wearing different clothes?
  • What items of clothes were good for the first trimester? (I really feel like I need to buy some other clothes as most of them are getting uncomfortable.)
  • Especially if you’re in the UK, what shops were good for things to wear?

I’m usually a quite basic H&M person. I’ve had a quick look around maternity clothes and they all seem horrific… The best I could see were on Envie de Fraises or ASOS.

But it seems really early to be doing anything at 5 weeks. I mean I should probably not be so fat by now? When I’m looking around it seems people don’t do anything till week 8 or something. It’s just making me feel quite uncomfortable. I work in a quite formal office so can’t just wear slouchy pants and sweatshirts with pizza on, sadly. (The one in the picture is the one I’m in love with but can’t seem to get in the UK… Boooooo.)

In other news, we went to the local pub for Sunday lunch. It was the first time with a friend who I usually try to tempt to drink alcohol so I think she was a bit surprised when I ordered a pint of OJ and lemonade instead. Cheaper than my usual bottle of rosé! This pregnancy thing is economical! Dog and I make a great team where roasts are concerned. He eats the beef and I eat the Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. (I am rather fussy about meat and he likes it more.) See picture below… It was a giant. Almost as big as Doglet. Maybe this is why I’m getting fat?!

Anyway… Back to the clothing question. Tell me about your maternity style in the first trimester! I don’t want to tempt fate by getting a load of stuff before we’ve made it to 12 weeks. But I’m feeling like a heffalump and I need some clothing advice.

Heeeeeelp!!

  1. I can’t believe someone makes a jumper like that! It did make me chuckle.

A couple of my last cycle buddies said in early pregnancy they used a safety pin or hairband to make their work trousers a bit bigger, and just wore more floaty tops over it. I really don’t know at what point it’s normal to start to show a lot, I guess everyone may be a bit different in that department. I have always had a flat belly so I’m worried how I’m going to hide this from work colleagues as long as possible, because I really don’t want to be spreading the news until 12 weeks. Compare that to a friend of mine who I saw at about 16 weeks and if she hadn’t said she was pregnant I never would have guessed as she always is a little on the plumper side! Nothing showing for me yet though although I do think my boobs might be a tiny bit bigger.

I know right?! I love that jumper! I really want one but they’re in California so I don’t know if it’s a bit OTT to get them sent from the U.S.! I have another one with cartoons of pizza from H&M and I wear it all the time!
I’m definitely not showing. I’m just fat! I feel like I need some other stuff to wear to stop myself feeling so squished in my clothes!

  2. I had to start wearing empire line dresses and stretchier jeans/joggers at 6 weeks, but tbh I really think it’s the bloat that doesn’t help with the waistline.
I bought a few pairs of h&m mat jeans and some debs mat yoga pants at around 8 weeks and have to wear these now if I’m not wearing my usual scrubs at work!
I upgraded to some slouchier bigger pj bottoms from M&S last week for bedtime comfort.
I honestly don’t think there is a right or wrong time. If you’re not fitting in your clothes, def your body saying it needs to go shopping!

Thank you! Yes I think it is bloat rather than baby or anything as exciting as that. My stomach feels huge and so do my boobs. I think I’ll have to go and try some clothes on and see how it goes… I’m terrible at fitting into jeans generally as I have very short legs! The ones I have from M&S are meant to be cropped! 🙂

I need to get some bigger bras ASAP too. I pulled out my box of maternity clothes and have been wearing the pants. I just feel too bloated in my regular pants. They do make these belly band things, I used them in my last pregnancy. You just put them over your pants and you can wear your pants unbuttoned and unzipped and no one will notice. I bought them at motherhood maternity.

I wore a belly band over normal pants for a while. Stretchy yoga pants were my BFF. And I have been living in leggings for the last 3 months lol. Oh, and maxi dresses are awesome too!

Aww thanks. Maxi dresses don’t work when you are oompa loompa size like I am! 🙂 Think I need to cut down on the dinners!

Omg, I was bigger before pregnancy than you are now, I’m sure. You’d be surprised… Those maternity dresses flatter!

Haha! I’ve just done an ASOS order. We’ll see! I honestly can’t do maxi dresses as I’d trip over them!! 🙂

Also, I saw tour burrito baby post, but I’m thinking if you find an outfit for a baby that is a pizza slice, it would fit in your recent blog themes 😉

My skinny jeans stopped zipping up at 6 weeks…because I’m classy, I kept wearing them until 9 weeks (yep, undone with longer shirts to cover up). When I pulled on my first pair of maternity jeans at 9 weeks I was in heaven! No more squished belly 🙂

Ahhhh. Well I’m 5 and a bit! I think I can do them up just, but it isn’t pleasant! And they need undoing when I sit down! Classy is just the word! 🙂

I started to feel quite nauseous at 6 weeks and any pressure on my stomach was too much. Embrace maternity jeans!

Yes, poor you! Been reading about your morning sickness woes. It sounds horrific. Am telling myself I won’t have it as I haven’t felt sick so far! I have the mouth watering / metallic taste thing. And I’m very tired. But I’m sort of hoping I’m not a sickness person! In hardly ever sick in my life and I really don’t cope well with nausea! I hope you feel better soon!

I really hope yours goes away soon. It sounds so awful. I was sick once last year – on my birthday – and I’m hardly ever sick. I was at a conference and I ended up projectile vomiting. Kept having to run to the bathroom. I had such a bad time and that was just one day! I’m a terrible sick person! Poor you. Much sympathy!

I’m rarely sick either. It’s been 6 weeks straight now, I’ve had to resign myself to the fact that I’m sick, I can’t do the things I normally do and to just accept it and ride it out for however long it’s going to last. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Brill thanks! Only thing is I’m v short. Think I’ll have to try them out if I get that far! I managed to put 3 days between pregnancy tests this time. Now aiming for 4! Next Wednesday! I still can’t believe it’s still happening…

Is that the ones with the built in band? At least they do free returns. I returned my entire order last time! All the dresses we down to my ankles!

Yep that’s the ones. I have a pair of black ones and the band blends in completely so no one will notice it. I always wear tops that cover it anyway

When (if?) the nausea kicks in you will be constantly reminded that it’s real! I have a bath mat constantly pulled up beside the toilet – I call it my prayer matt…everytime I vomit I am reminded that little one is still in there, still going strong

I used the belly band thing for as long as possible, but made a vow to myself that “the next time around” I would allow myself to wear maternity clothes much sooner. I had held off as long as I could and when I finally put them on I thought WHY in the world did I not do this sooner?!! SO much more comfortable! The first trimester bloat is brutal! Good luck!!

Hahaha thank you! I just feel a bit of a fraud right now as not properly pregnant, or it doesn’t feel that way. I’m still paranoid I’m going to lose it. I have a scan next week (almost two weeks away) so maybe we’ll feel more like it after that. I definitely feel like all my clothes fit differently now, so need to do something. And ugh, summer heat! Not good for those with a complex about flab!

  9. I was dieting before Christmas, but just kept getting bigger and couldn’t work out why! I didn’t know I was pregnant.
So I think bloating in early pregnancy is normal. Especially if you have been taking fertility drugs/treatment.

  10. I’m right there with you! At less than 5 weeks I couldn’t even button my pants, here I am at 6+4 and the bloat has gone down a tiny bit but I’m still huge. My hubby keeps saying it’s ok you’re pregnant! I’m like….no I’m 6 weeks pregnant….not 14!! I gave in and bought a bella band which I can leave my pants unbuttoned and the band just looks like a longer shirt under my clothes. Welcome to pregnancy bloat!
