So a couple of weeks ago I got a call from my brother’s friend who was throwing a surprise birthday party for her boyfriend. She knew I made cakes (as I made one for my brother for a party she was at) and so she wanted to know if I could do one for her boyfriend’s party.
“It depends what it is,” I say nervously.
“We’re throwing him a surprise skiing party so a ski themed cake would be good!”
Me: “Okay.”
Challenge accepted!
Here’s the cake…
It’s three vanilla madeira sponges reconstructed into a mountain with vanilla buttercream and raspberry jam. The trees are piped out of green buttercream and the skiers – well, I couldn’t pipe them! You’ll notice the runs are all black runs…
It took quite a long time to make and I eventually finished at 3am (although I wasn’t working the entire time as I needed time for the cake to cool off).
The pictures aren’t great as I only ever use my iPhone but you should be able to see in some of them that there are sprinkles of ice. And before they took it, there was some extra snow added to the trees!
As ever, everything is made out of buttercream as I don’t really do fondant. It got picked up yesterday afternoon and I haven’t heard anything back so I’m hoping it went down okay!
(Edited to add: I heard back! Thanks for all the words of encouragement you sent in the meantime whilst I was going a bit paranoid about it!)
“Hey!!! The cake was amazing. Thankyou so much!!! Everyone loved it and it was so perfect for the theme! Definitely post some pictures [on my bakery page]. I know a few people were taking pictures so i will forward any good ones. Thank you again!”
– Sounds like a satisfied customer. Phew! ☺️
Amazing! Such talent.

This is so amazing! I totally love it. Have you done some training to get so good or is it just years of practice and talent?

Thank you! No training really. I did Home Economics GCSE (food technology) but just for fun. I just always liked baking. I did do a 1 day course to learn how to pipe buttercream flowers but other than that it’s just experimentation and the internet! 😉 I like it when I have a challenge and have to try and figure out how to get it into 3D cake and buttercream!

I’m so impressed. I sometimes do ‘fancy’ cakes but nothing like this standard. I’m really inspired to learn how to pipe icing now 🙂

Ah I only learned how to pipe some flowers in that class (6 types) but it sort of explained the mechanics behind it. Then I just practised a lot! I’ve read a few books but the easiest thing is just to get a box of the Wilton tips and try it out! I like doing stuff other than flowers too but you have to think about it and figure out how you’re going to do it!

Thank you so much! I think it’s because I have a fairly uncreative job that I like doing creative things on the side every now and then!

Thanks… She did pay for it though! (Actually not sure if she did… She said she’d transfer the money but I haven’t checked!) I’m a terrible business person though as I usually just about cover the cost of ingredients and don’t make any money! 😂

Thanks! I thought it was a great party theme too, as most people have winter woollies anyway. We are having a Christmas party soon so I may advise a dress code! 🙂

Haha. I think the stress of organising a big surprise party got the better of them! I’ve heard back and they liked it – I’ll edit the post! ☺️

Oh good! I showed it to Brian and he said, “you should make that this winter for us.”. Yeah… I’ll get right on that, Buddy! Your post did encourage me to figure out what I’ll do for Matthews birthday cake in June. Thank you for making me make a plan!!!

Hahaha. I do have a plan for Christmas cake but it involves fruit cake, which I’ve never made before. Not sure if I can manage it as it needs to be made in advance! :O

Oh my gosh, I am actually in awe of your cake-decorating abilities :-0 I have learnt over the years how to get the sponge just right, but I was born without the arty part of my brain (or if it is there, it just doesn’t seem to be able to communicate to my motor system how to put something into action!), so they never look particularly amazing. Did you teach yourself over the years ?x

I’m sure you have it! I think everyone has something but they all have different ways of expressing it. For example I wish I could paint really well or even sew or something… but my medium seems to be cake decorating! 🙂 I bet you have something but you have to figure it out! Plus… If you can make a cake that tastes nice then that is the main thing! 🙂

Oh and yeah, I taught myself really. I just baked a lot in my spare time – I actually don’t enjoy baking all that much – it’s okay but a bit boring. I like making nice things though and decorating them (I’m impatient for them to cool!) so it’s a necessary task to bake them! Decorating ready made cakes is cheating! 🙂
